Wildlife of Menorca

Menorca is a UNESCO recognised biosphere.  In other words, Menorca is an internationally renowned nature reserve and, as such, plays home to a rich variation of animal wildlife.  Most notable are the eagles and other hunting birds.

Booted Eagle

During your holiday you can expect to see soaring booted eagles, huge red kites, Egyptian vultures, buzzards and, if you are lucky, the elusive osprey lives here as well.

Menorca also attracts many migrating and endemic bird species, which take advantage of its warm temperate climate.  Notable species that live on and visit the island are warblers (6 varieties), finches (4 varieties) and larks (3 varieties).  We also often see bee-eaters, blue rock thrushes and in common view is the hoopoe, which is almost an unofficial emblem of Menorca.  In short, Menorca is a bird watchers paradise.

Amongst the land mammals that live here are horses, rabbits, hedgehogs and the main land predator on the island, the pine marten.

Wildlife of Menorca

Whilst non endemic, one of the rarest sites on Menorca are the thousands of tortoises that live on the island.  These are a relic of the Moorish occupation of Menorca and are always a memorable part of the holiday when we see one whilst out walking.
