Guided walking holidays in Mallorca

Mallorca is the largest of the 3 Balearic Islands and is probably best known as a main stream tourist destination. In many ways this is an unfair judgement, because to drive no more than 30 minutes from Palma airport is to find a paradise of awe inspiring mountains, picture postcard villages and dramatic sea views.

Our walks mainly take place in the Sierra de Tramontana mountain range, which has always been a magnet to painters, musicians, poets and, of course, people who love the great outdoors. The famous composer, Chopin, actually lived in this area and was inspired to write his most famous works whilst on the island. Culturally, Mallorca is hugely diverse and, like the other two Balearic Islands, oozes evidence from 3000 years of various occupations and conquests. The Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Romans have all called Mallorca home over the centuries.

Mallorca is a great destination for bird watchers. Like other Mediterranean islands, Mallorca is a magnet for birds wishing to rest during spring and autumn migration periods. What makes Mallorca special in this area however, are the huge wetlands on the island, which attract a wide range of endemic and migrating species. During spring and autumn we can expect to see ducks, terns, gulls, herons, egrets and many different types of wading bird. In addition, Mallorca is home to birds such as the Black Vulture, Eleonora's Falcon, Audouin's Gull, Moustached Warbler and Marmora's Warbler, which are all very rare or difficult to see in the rest of Europe.

The island is home to over 1300 varieties of flowering plants, of which 40 are uniquely Mallorcan. These include the Balearic cyclamen, giant orchids and the delicate bee orchid. Spring and early summer are the time to see them in all their glory, but autumn can also be good. Look out especially for the asphodel, with its tall spikes and clusters of pink flowers, Illa de Cabrera's rare dragon arum, with its exotically hairy look, the rock rose in the Sierra de Tramontana and the Balearic peonies.
